On Leading with Deep Curiosity

When was the last time you asked a question that changed everything?

During my recent trip to Kentucky, I was able to catch up with my friend and colleague Dr. Debra Clary and she surprised me with something special: an advanced copy of her book, The Curiosity Curve, which launched THIS week!

What I’m learning from Debra’s book is how curiosity is like a muscle that can be strengthened over time. When leaders become more intentional about when and how they tap into curiosity, they unlock more adaptability, deeper connection, and more meaningful impact.

Here are some of the insights that have resonated so far:

1. Shift from answer-driven to question-powered leadership – Leaders who slow down to ask better, braver questions often end up with deeper insight and more sustainable solutions.

2. Curiosity as a measurable curve – Curiosity rises, plateaus, or declines over time if not intentionally nurtured (there’s an assessment to help you see where you are, individually and as a team.)

3. Structured exploration & focused engagement – Debra offers methods to channel curiosity: structured exploration, disciplined observation, and intervals of reflection so new ideas can emerge.

4. Courage, vulnerability, and trust – Genuine curiosity often requires admitting “I don’t know,” and creating spaces where people feel safe to speak up.

5. Turning constraints into creative levers – When teams use constraints to spark curiosity instead of stifle it, they reframe limitations as invitations to think differently and innovate.

6. Creating a curiosity culture – Curiosity isn’t a workshop, exercise, or “check-the-box,” effort; it must be woven into the everyday culture of teams and organizations.

In a world where we chase fast answers, the real work is often staying curious so our next move is more grounded and intentional.
